(June 24): A doctor who returned to France after doing humanitarian work in the Democratic Republic of Congo has Ebola, according to the French health ministry, which is working to trace possible contacts to ensure they isolate.

The patient is the first Ebola case to be identified outside the region in the current outbreak. He is in stable condition and is receiving care at a specialised facility, the ministry said Wednesday, adding that he was isolated and taken to a hospital immediately after returning to France pending test results.

The health ministry didn’t give details on the doctor’s travel.

The rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has sickened more than 1,100 people in Congo and Uganda and killed almost 280. Health officials have struggled to trace contacts and contain transmission in a region beset by insecurity, displacement, hunger and gaps in disease surveillance.
