(Dec 20): Target Corp’s online operations have stabilised after a technology outage disrupted the retailer’s digital order pickup, returns and other functions during the all-important holiday period.
“As of this morning, we’re seeing stability in areas like order pickup, drive up, returns/order history and replenishment functions,” chief stores officer Adrienne Costanzo said Saturday in a memo seen by Bloomberg News.
The outage went on for hours on Friday, with shoppers reporting on social media that they weren’t able to place online orders or see their purchase history. Costanzo’s memo pointed to “a third-party system error,” without providing specifics.
Days leading up to Christmas are some of the busiest for retailers as consumers hunt for gifts.
It’s a particularly important period this year at Target, which is seeking to reverse a lengthy slump and return to growth under incoming chief executive officer Michael Fiddelke. The company is working to rebuild with a trendy assortment and consistent store experience after weak demand for discretionary products and fierce competition led to soft sales in recent years.
Costanzo said the company will continue to monitor performance.

Target said Saturday on X that its digital experience is fully restored and that it’s working to address impacted orders. The retailer apologised for the disruption.
