The Edge Singapore, as a publication, does not quite have the same vintage as SG60 but we are nearly halfway there. Launched in 2002, we have made our mark with our coverage of Singapore business and economic news.
The cover story of our launch issue back in March 2002, with the headline “Remaking Singapore Inc”, aptly defined how Singapore’s business landscape needs to evolve. Back then, Singapore’s very internationalised economy was trying to cope with the fallout from the 2001 global shock from the 9-11 attacks. It was also a time when regional competition was getting tougher but also when overseas business opportunities were richer.
Over the years, we have been expanding on this theme by telling the stories of the various companies that you will read about in this book you are now holding, how they are finding ways to adapt and grow by identifying and riding on new trends and themes.
Mapletree Investments, for example, was a newly restructured entity spun off from PSA. Over the years, we have tracked how Mapletree, under the leadership of group CEO Hiew Yoon Khong, has grown from strength to strength. Tapping on its home base, it expanded steadily into literally all over the world. It spun off numerous REITs, creating a new level of liveliness to the local stock market.
There is also CapitaLand. When The Edge Singapore first started writing about this real estate giant, it was very much a traditional developer and owner of commercial and residential properties, not just Singapore but especially in overseas markets such as China. Yet, CapitaLand was steadily transforming itself into a real estate manager with a steadier, and more sustainable income profile.
Numerous more notable local companies are featured in this book too. They range from key government-linked businesses such as SurbanaJurong to homegrown stalwarts of their respective industries such as Koh Brothers; they belong to the fast-moving financial services such as PhillipCapital and iFast Corp and also traditional, but ever-popular home-grown brands such as Old Chang Kee.
Together, these companies have all played a part in how Singapore’s economy as a whole has evolved and grown. The Edge Singapore is proud to do our part covering their journey thus far and for years to come.
