(Feb 5): President Prabowo Subianto appointed Juda Agung as deputy finance minister, tapping a former Bank Indonesia board member after a recent central bank reshuffle rattled markets.

Prabowo inaugurated Agung on Thursday to fill the second deputy finance minister position left vacant by Thomas Djiwandono, who joined the central bank last month as a deputy governor.

Agung stepped down suddenly from his role as BI deputy governor in January and was replaced by Djiwandono, a move that sparked market concerns about the central bank’s independence and sent the rupiah to its lowest level in January. In the finance ministry, Agung will work alongside fellow deputy Suahasil Nazara.

Agung, 61, is a central bank veteran, having previously served as a deputy governor as well as an assistant governor overseeing financial system stability and macro-prudential policy. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Birmingham.
