SINGAPORE (Aug 15): The latest wave of fintech innovation is beginning to change the way we transact. More banking services are now accessible from our mobile phones and making payments from e-wallets is no longer a foreign concept. These highly visible fintech services are bringing innovation closer to home and are seeing ever increasing adoption, usage and availability.
Globally, fintech investment amounted to US$55.3 billion in 2018, with Singapore receiving US$365 million ($492.4 million), up from US$180 million in 2017 [1].

RHB Bank Singapore analyst Oong Chun Sung has downgraded his sector rating on rubber products from “overweight” to “neutral” in light of the normalising of volume sales in the first half of this year due to front-loading activities.
“Our previous sector call has been largely played out, with share prices rallying 40% to 50% in 2024” writes Oong in his Jan 9 note.
After ending the year on a surprisingly strong footing, Singapore moves into 2025 in better shape than we had expected only a few weeks ago. Although the overall global environment continues to look troubled, at least there has been some good news on the US economy and even on China in recent weeks. In addition, we now know that Singapore’s economy enjoyed strong momentum in the final months of 2024, providing a firm foundation for the coming year.
What impact will the next US administration have on economic growth and inflation? The answer is not yet clear because while some of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed policies would boost growth and reduce inflation over time, others will have the opposite effect.
Asiadollar credit spreads exhibited disparity in December, with Bloomberg Asia USD Investment Grade (IG) spreads widening by 4 basis points (bps) month-on-month to 78 bps, while Bloomberg Asia USD High Yield (HY) spread tightened 41 bps m-o-m to 417 bps as at time of writing.
