2025 is one of the big milestones for Singapore, with the SG60 festivities in full swing to celebrate our island-nation’s 60 years of independence.
The automotive industry in particular, has seen its fair share of tumultuous upheavals, especially given the lofty state of COE premiums in recent times and the onslaught of electric vehicle brands from China.
Yet through it all, household names like Volkswagen have persevered and pivoted when necessary to ensure it remained relevant and competitive through the changing eras, much like Singapore itself.
Volkswagen has been sold in Singapore for over fifty years through various authorised distributors or ADs for short.
In fact, many people and their families have some history with Volkswagen over the past half a century. (pictured above is the motoring editor with his Mk2 Golf GTI, circ. 1997)
However, in 2007, it evolved into an agency model, as the brand itself began direct sales of its cars to local consumers under the Volkswagen Group Singapore (or VGS for short) banner.

By importing and retailing the vehicles directly to customers, VGS seeks to provide Singapore buyers with the quality experience they expect from Europe’s largest car maker.
At present, the diverse portfolio under VGS has grown and now encompasses VW passenger and commercial vehicles, Škoda, Cupra, and used cars through Das WeltAuto, as well as aftersales support for Seat cars.
