(Nov 23): Tesla is nearing the final step of the design process for its AI5 chip and starting work on a new AI6 chip to be deployed in its cars and data centres, Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk said Sunday in an X post.

“Our goal is to bring a new AI (artificial intelligence) chip design to volume production every 12 months,” said Musk, the world’s richest person. “The current version in cars is AI4; we are close to taping out AI5 and are starting work on AI6.”

Samsung Electronics Co announced in July that it had secured a US$16.5 billion ($21.56 billion) pact to produce AI semiconductors for Tesla. Musk said at the time that a new Samsung facility in Texas would be dedicated to making the AI6 chip.

“We expect to build chips at higher volumes ultimately, than all other AI chips combined,” Musk said in Sunday’s post. “I’m not kidding.”
