(April 7): Singapore said the US has withdrawn an “inaccurate statement” on bilateral trade balances that had underpinned Washington’s decision to launch probes into more than a dozen economies last month.

Singapore’s Minister of State for Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang told lawmakers on Tuesday that the city-state ran a trade deficit with the US in 2024, contrary to earlier figures out of Washington that showed a surplus. The trade numbers initially presented by the US suggested Singapore was contributing to global manufacturing overcapacity.

The US Trade Representative “has since removed their inaccurate statement from its Federal Register notice,” Gan said. “With the US investigations ongoing, we should not speculate on the basis or potential outcomes.”

Singapore, along with more than a dozen major economies, is the subject of sweeping trade investigations by the US. The Asian nation said it has submitted data and will engage with the US Trade Representative to seek clarification on the trade figures and the basis for the probes.
