(April 24) : Nike Inc. is cutting 1,400 roles, less than 2% of its total workforce, as the sporting-goods company tries to get its turnaround plan back on track.
The cuts will mostly affect technology roles in Nike’s global operations team, the company said Thursday. Nike is streamlining its structure and using more advanced automation, Chief Operating Officer Venkatesh Alagirisamy said in a note to employees.
This is the latest reorganization under Chief Executive Officer Elliott Hill. Nike cut less than 1% of corporate staff this past summer, and in January laid off about 775 workers at distribution centers as part of a push to automate operations.
Nike had about 77,800 employees worldwide as of May 31.
The Beaverton, Oregon-based company’s shares rose 0.5% in extended trading as of 4:57 p.m. in New York. The stock has fallen 30% this year.
