(May 4): Two US Army service members went missing in Morocco during a training exercise, the US Africa Command said on Sunday.

The service members were reported missing on Saturday near the city of Tan Tan while participating in African Lion, the command’s largest annual joint exercise with African partner countries.

The incident is not terrorism related and appears to be an accident, a defence official who asked not to be identified discussing ongoing search and rescue efforts said. Initial reports indicate the two soldiers may have fallen off a cliff into the ocean, the official said.

A search and rescue operation by countries participating in African Lion participating countries is ongoing, including ground, air and maritime assets, Africom said in a statement on Sunday. The incident remains under investigation.

Morocco is one of the US’s closest partners in Africa. This year’s exercises in Morocco involved around 5,000 personnel from over 40 countries including in live-fire drills, explosives training, and humanitarian assistance.
