The group of nations would like to see the safe return of Syrians who fled the country under the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, who was toppled at the weekend, the G7 will say.
“After decades of atrocities committed by the Assad regime, we stand with the people of Syria,” the draft says.
The statement could still change before it’s published.
Many Syrian refugees fled west to Europe in the aftermath of the war that began in the country in 2011, including to G7 member Germany.
