As Sun Group ramps up hotel and resort development in Phu Quoc, the Vietnamese real estate and tourism conglomerate is extending its “destination ecosystem” into the skies with daily direct flights from July 25 between Singapore and Vietnam’s largest island through its fully owned full-service carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA).

Launched in October 2025, SPA will be the only full-service carrier on the three-hour Singapore-Phu Quoc route. Economy Class passengers will receive a 23kg check-in baggage allowance and Business Class passengers will receive two pieces of check-in baggage allowance at 23kg each. A light snack and beverage are served onboard across both Economy and Business Class cabins.

Dubbed a “resort airline”, the upcoming route marks the latest addition that “completes Sun Group’s comprehensive ecosystem”, says Eileen Lim, sales director at SPA and regional manager of travel sales representative Discover the World.

Through SPA’s route, Sun Group funnels international visitors directly into its hospitality assets. Travellers flying on SPA before the end of the year will receive complimentary access to attractions such as the Sun World Hon Thom cable car, theme park and water park, alongside discounts of up to 30% on accommodation and dining and entertainment offerings within the group’s ecosystem, according to the company.

Integrated holiday experience

Speaking at a media briefing on June 17, Lim adds: “We do not just provide transportation. What travellers get is an integrated holiday experience — seamlessly connecting the flight, the stay and the destination from the moment you take off until you land. SPA provides the wing while Sun Hospitality & Entertainment delivers the destination experience from upscale resorts to Sun World entertainment hubs."

The airline is part of Sun Group’s broader strategy to create a seamless “fly-stay-play” experience spanning four pillars: recreation and entertainment, tourism and resorts, luxury real estate and urban infrastructure investment.

Singapore is a key market in SPA’s international growth strategy, says La Vinh Nam, deputy director of sales at SPA. “Singapore offers strong opportunities and shares our focus on quality service and premium travel experiences.”

He foresees “high demand from the Singapore market” and the potential to increase flight frequency.

In 2026, the airline plans to expand its fleet to 30 aircraft, comprising 25 narrow-body A320/A321 aircraft and five wide-body A330 aircraft. According to the group, its international network will progressively connect Phu Quoc with key markets across Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia, alongside wide-body services to Central Asia and Russia.

Looking ahead, SPA plans to expand its fleet to 100 aircraft by 2030 and connect Phu Quoc with major aviation hubs across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, supporting Sun Group's broader ambition to attract more international visitors to its hospitality and tourism assets across Vietnam.

Founded nearly two decades ago, the group has built a portfolio of 18 large-scale resort developments across Vietnam, including Capella Hanoi Hotel, InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort and JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay. Other developments include luxury residential projects, theme parks and tourism attractions across Vietnam.

In Phu Quoc, Sun Group currently owns five hospitality resorts on the island, including JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, New World Phu Quoc Resort, Premier Village Phu Quoc Resort, Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay and La Festa Phu Quoc – Curio Collection by Hilton.

Vietnam beckons

Vietnam recorded over 21 million international arrivals in 2025, up 20% y-o-y. To capture this demand, Sun Group has five more hotels slated to open by the end of this year: Rixos Phu Quoc will be managed by Accor-backed Ennismore; while Moxy Phu Quoc Hon Thom, Fairfield by Marriott Phu Quoc Hon Thom, Phu Quoc Marriott Resort & Spa and Courtyard by Marriott Phu Quoc will be operated by Nasdaq-listed Marriott International, according to Luong Thi Hoang Lan, director of sales from Sun Hospitality & Entertainment.

The hospitality push is part of a broader transformation of the island ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s (Apec) 2027 summit, which will be hosted in Phu Quoc.

Sun Group plans to add 15 hotels — about 6,500 five-star rooms — within its Bai Dat Do (Ruby Beach) mixed-use development over the next 18 months, nearly doubling the island’s existing luxury accommodation supply. The project will bring together 13 international hotel brands, including the Vietnam debuts of W Hotels, Westin, Le Méridien, Conrad and DoubleTree by Hilton, alongside a 136,000 sqm retail complex managed by Lotte.

The neighbouring Ong Quan Mountain Eco-Tourism area is also under development, while new dining, retail and lifestyle precincts, including a Lotte-managed retail complex, are set to bolster the island’s appeal as a regional leisure destination, adds the group.
