The global stock market plunged into turmoil on April 2 after US President Donald Trump declared “Liberation Day” and announced reciprocal tariffs worldwide. The sell-off marked the sharpest decline since the market crash in February 2020, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Losses deepened when markets reopened on April 7 — a Monday — following the introduction of a global baseline tariff rate of 10% on April 5. The resulting three-day slide was again described as the most severe since Black Monday in 1987.
What should one invest in given the prevailing environment of extreme uncertainties and volatility? Global equities are swinging wildly, racking up big gains and big losses on a daily basis. Even the market pros are confounded. Tariffs — and especially the worsening trade war between the US and China — will have a real impact on consumer prices, inflation, as well as cost of doing business and thus, growth, margins and profits for companies. Much of which we have yet to see materialise. US consumer confidence has tumbled but spending, thus far, remains resilient.
One of the main thrusts of President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policies is to reindustrialise and revitalise the manufacturing sector, including onshoring and expanding its domestic supply chain, strengthen national security and bring back American jobs lost to the past few decades of globalisation. The combination of policies includes both carrot (lower corporate tax rate, less red tape and bureaucracy, pro-business regulatory environment, cheaper energy costs) and stick (import tariffs, political pressure, domestic sourcing requirements for federally funded projects).
We had originally planned on a two-part series to explain the “truths” behind the actions that Donald Trump has undertaken in his short eight-week tenure, thus far, as president of the United States of America. We called his blueprint the “MAGA Pathway”. But we realised that we would miss out a critical third leg of Trumpianomics — no less important than tariffs and currency. That is, the need to deregulate to raise competitiveness and reduce the fiscal deficit for long-term sustainability.

The crisis came to a head recently, after the insurance industry passed on escalating costs — due to the sharp increase in the number of claims as well as increasing cost per claim — to customers via a hefty 40% to 70% hike in insurance premiums.
