Singapore’s overall 1Q unemployment rate rises to 2.3% in MOM advance estimates

SINGAPORE (April 28): The overall unemployment rate in Singapore has increased from 2.2% to 2.3% over the first quarter of the year, according to preliminary estimates by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) released today.

Unemployment rates on a seasonally adjusted basis for March 2017 for residents and citizens remained at 3.2% and 3.5% respectively, unchanged from Dec 2016.

Total employment has continued its decline by 8,500 in 1Q – in contrast to the growth of 2,300 seen in the previous quarter – due to a decrease in work permit holders in the marine and construction sectors, which continue to experience weakness, says MOM in a Friday release.
