The second iteration of "Clash of the Classics" returns to celebrate the “joy of the machine” and Singapore’s SG60

True petrolheads connect on a spiritual level that transcends the badges on the bonnets.

There may be a time and place for official clubs, but it is only when you mix it up, mingle and blur the boundaries that passionate enthusiasts can enjoy the glorious sights and sounds that accompany “Clash of the Classics II”.

This year’s Clash of the Classics was convened to celebrate Singapore’s SG60, our island-nation’s 60th year post-independence.

The atmosphere at the start and end points is convivial, the vibes chill, and the cars, sensational, particularly if you’re a fan of pre-2000s Ferraris and air-cooled Porsches.

Unlike the hum, beeps and assorted electronica that hang like a miasma at a gathering of electric vehicles, the carpark is filled with the evocative sound and smell of exceptional machines, and will spark joy in the hearts of even the most jaded petrolhead.

There’s no clash or conflict, just the cosy camaraderie of old friends catching up and new friends made.

The curated drive before the end-point at Gillman Barracks was the cherry topping to the gathering, because it let the owners stretch the legs of their sports cars.

We talk to the organisers of this year’s soiree, JS Yong (pictured above left) and Charles Chui (pictured above right), who represent the “Air-Cooled Club - Porsche” and “Ferrari Classico” respectively.

Chui, a business owner of a logistics company, tells us, “It’s a gathering of friends and car enthusiasts to chat about our shared love for classic sportscars, especially since many of us have owned both brands at one point (or even at the same time!).”

“Classic Ferraris and air-cooled Porsches represent the pinnacle of analogue driving experiences,” adds Yong, a partner in a financial services firm.

“A joint drive honours decades of motorsport history, mechanical artistry and timeless design from two of the most iconic marques in automotive culture," he continues.

There’s a tasteful air of decorum to the entire proceedings and is a welcome throwback to earlier car-meets.

Yong nods in agreement, “Both classic Ferraris and air-cooled Porsches carry a strong aura of exclusivity. A private, curated drive adds an element of prestige and creates an event people talk about and want to be part of in the future.”

“These cross-community events become the backdrop for lifelong friendships, meaningful conversations and shared passions. Whether it’s a mechanical breakdown or a memorable curved road, the roads bind passionate car people like us together,” Yong says.
