NatureLab Tokyo has brought its haircare solutions to Singapore, harnessing the power of plant stem cells

As someone with long hair that tends to tangle and frizz, finding the right products has always been a challenge. Like most aspects of self-care, looking after one’s hair is not just about treating symptoms as they show up; it’s about creating a holistic regimen that focuses on the root of things — literally.

One brand is looking to do just that, with a nature-inspired twist. Established in 2017 by Rosa Takagi, NatureLab Tokyo “merges Japanese tradition with cutting-edge scientific innovation” to target hair concerns with a scalp-focused approach. Its offerings are centred around four primary hair goals: enhancing shine, volume, smoothness and repairing damage.

NatureLab Tokyo recently launched in Singapore, bringing its suite of products to a new audience in the city-state.

One key draw of the brand’s products is its use of plant stem cells, which are said to combat oxidative stress and protect against environmental damage. These benefits are harnessed through PhytoCellTec technology to “address hair issues at a cellular level”.

For those who might worry about overly harsh products, NatureLab Tokyo’s offerings are also free of sulphates, parabens and phthalates.

I’ve been trying products from NatureLab Tokyo’s Perfect Smooth collection, which is made to “tackle frizz and enhance dry, unruly hair”.

The shampoo and conditioner ($21 each), which contain yuzu ceramides and exotic oils, noticeably revitalises the hair. Admittedly, the frizz control isn’t very noticeable — perhaps due to Singapore’s humid climate — but brushing my hair has become a breeze. What was once a painstaking chore has now turned into a smooth glide.

The products’ floral scent, while not overpowering or cloying, lingers — even after lunch in a busy coffee shop. The Perfect Smooth collection products also include argan stem cells, which the brand says can stimulate hair follicles to improve growth.

NatureLab has two other lines, Perfect Volume and Perfect Repair, as well as a Perfect Clean clarifying scalp scrub ($26).
