(Oct 25): US President Donald Trump and Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a phone call on Saturday, in which he congratulated the premier on her appointment last week.
Takaichi said the pair had a “good and candid” conversation and that she appreciated his congratulatory message.
“Together with him, I am determined to elevate the Japan-US Alliance to even greater heights,” Takaichi wrote on X. “I am looking forward to working closely with the US and our regional partners towards a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Trump is on travel to Malaysia, before heading to Japan and South Korea, and is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Takaichi as part of his trip.
