(Dec 17): Kylian Mbappé, the superstar footballer at Real Madrid, won about €61 million as part of French legal dispute with his former club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Mbappé was awarded approximately €40 million corresponding to an unpaid signing bonus instalment, according to a Paris employment tribunal that concluded on Tuesday. In addition, the footballer was granted just over €20 million for wage arrears and an “ethical bonus” covering the three months before his mid-2024 move to Real Madrid.

A court rejected several of Mbappé’s demands, though the full details of the judgment are not yet public. The footballer was seeking approximately €240 million from Paris Saint-Germain, claiming the massive sum is owed due to his treatment near the end of his time at the club.

Mbappé’s tenure with Paris Saint-Germain ended in a free transfer to Real Madrid after his relationship with the club deteriorated. This began in 2023 when he informed the Qatari-backed team he would not renew his contract. He subsequently rejected a reported €300 million move to Saudi Arabia, which would have financially benefitted PSG.

During his seven years at the French capital’s main club, Mbappé failed to deliver a Champions League title, reaching the final once. The year following his 2024 departure, PSG won their first ever Champions League trophy, defeating Inter Milan in the final.

Paris Saint-Germain said in a statement that it would honour the ruling and is considering an appeal. The club added that is “has acted in good faith and honesty throughout”.
