The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) has appointed former CEO of DBS Group Holdings Piyush Gupta as its 17th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore.
From August to December this year, Gupta will pursue research into the development of Singapore’s financial sector, says IPS in an Aug 22 announcement.
Gupta will deliver his series of three lectures on Oct 13, Nov 3 and Dec 8 at the National University of Singapore, which will be free and open to all. Thereafter, the lectures will be compiled and published as a book.
According to IPS, Gupta’s work will trace Singapore’s evolution into a leading financial centre, examine the tradeoffs between trust and innovation and explore the future of finance shaped by emerging technologies such as tokenisation and artificial intelligence (AI).
Gupta was CEO and director of DBS from November 2009 to March this year. He is currently chairman of the board of trustees of Singapore Management University, chairman of the Mandai Park Holdings Board, and deputy chairman of the board of Keppel Limited.
The S R Nathan Fellowship was announced in 2013 at IPS’ 25th anniversary gala dinner.
Gupta’s appointment follows Philip Yeo, the 16th S R Nathan Fellow. Yeo, a former chairman of the Economic Development Board (EDB), was also independent director at City Developments Limited until he retired on July 31.
Yeo had delivered three lectures on his experience of overseeing Singapore’s economic growth between March and June.
Previous S R Nathan Fellows include Ho Kwon Ping, founder and executive chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings; former Ambassador-at-Large Bilahari Kausikan; and former Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) managing director Ravi Menon.
