SATS' wholly-owned subsidiary Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) announced the opening of its US$270 million ($354.63 million) cargo terminal at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, the first new cargo terminal in 30 years.

WFS, which is the operator of the terminal, constructed the facility in partnership with Realterm and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The build began construction in 2021.

The facility is 350,000 square foot, and spans 26 acres. This expansion replaces two older facilities, and aims to reduce congestion, improve logistics flow and free up land for future development.

The new facility will include few innovations to streamline operations, reduce wait times for truck drivers and minimise queueing outside the facility. The new facility will also have 3,000 square feet of cooler space, allowing it to be a temperature sensitive facility for pharmaceuticals and perishables.

"WFS is proud of its 41 years of service to our customers at JFK," said Mike Simpson,
Gateway Services CEO, Americas at WFS. "TThis new development sets new standards for efficiency and safety and is a showpiece not just for JFK's aviation ecosystem, but to the air cargo industry worldwide. The facility embodies our dedication to connecting the world through logistics and embraces new levels of digitalisation and sustainability that will act as a model for other new cargo operations around the world."

Shares in SATS closed flat at $2.80 on Apr 28.
