Born in step with Singapore’s earliest aspirations, SJ continues to uplift lives and shape the global built environment.

Surbana Jurong Group (SJ) traces its roots to the 1960s, shaping Singapore’s urban and industrial landscape. Surbana, then part of the Housing Development Board (HDB), built modern public housing for a fast-growing population. Meanwhile, Jurong International drove industrialisation, transforming swampland into thriving economic zones. In 2015, they merged to continue on a shared mission to build Singapore’s future.

Initially owned by Temasek Holdings and JTC Corporation, SJ became wholly owned by the former in 2016. Today, headquartered in Singapore, it operates globally, bringing a distinctive blend of pragmatism, innovation, and vision to projects across 40 nations. Every masterplan, transport system, industrial hub and integrated solution embodies the DNA of a nation that has surpassed even its boldest ambitions.

HOUSING: DESIGNING HUMAN-CENTRIC SPACES

SJ has played a defining role in Singapore’s public housing landscape. Having designed 26 townships, it has created over one million homes that have housed generations of Singaporeans. Today, eight in ten Singaporeans live in an SJ-designed home.

SkyResidence @ Dawson

SkyResidence @ Dawson (pictured above) located in Queenstown – Singapore’s first satellite town and a place closely tied to SJ’s own origins – is a prime example of how SJ honours history through a future-ready lens. Seamlessly integrating high-density living with heritage preservation, the development strikes a thoughtful balance between modern needs and historical context.

As Singapore celebrates 60 years, SJ as a group marks a decade of growth, shaped by the same vision and resilience that built a nation.

SJ Campus at Jurong Innovation District

INDUSTRIAL: POWERING ECONOMIC PROGRESS

With a portfolio of over 100 industrial parks worldwide, SJ brings decades of experience to the design and development of major manufacturing hubs. Leaning on its expertise in design, engineering, and management, SJ develops advanced manufacturing hubs that balance practically with innovation.

In Singapore, SJ led the infrastructure planning and implementation for Jurong Innovation District (JID), a 600-hectare future-ready industrial hub. At its heart stands SJ Campus, the Group’s headquarters – a living showcase of smart, sustainable design. The campus deploys innovative and sustainable features – underfloor air distribution system, passive design strategies, motion sensor lights – to maximise energy efficiency.

Changi Airport Terminal 5

AVIATION: ELEVATING AIR TRAVEL

SJ has a proven track record of delivering future-ready airport infrastructure. In Singapore, it has contributed toward multiple terminals at Changi Airport, with the Group’s member company, SAA Architects, designing the award-winning Terminal 4. For the upcoming mega Terminal 5 (T5), SJ and SAA are part of the consortium of consultants deploying next-generation aviation strategies to set new benchmarks in airport design. T5 will reinforce Changi Airport’s status as a leading air hub, significantly expanding its handling capacity, optimising operations, and unlocking new opportunities as travel demand continues to rise in the decades ahead.

HEALTHCARE: SPACES THAT SUPPORT WELL-BEING

SJ designs holistic healthcare environments that prioritise both well-being and medical excellence. SAA played a key role in delivering the 1,800-bed Woodlands Health Campus – among the first in Singapore to house an integrated acute and community hospital, a medical centre, and a long-term care centre. The campus is designed with patient-centered care in mind, incorporating lush parkland within its grounds to support recovery and enhance well-being.

SECURITY: SAFEGUARDING CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

SJ’s AETOS Holdings plays a vital role in ensuring security across essential locations, including Jurong Island and Woodlands Checkpoint – the world’s busiest land crossing. With over 70 years of expertise and a 5,000-strong workforce, AETOS integrates manpower with advanced technologies to enhance safety and surveillance. In 2022, it launched Singapore’s first 5G Integrated Command Centre, featuring the country’s largest 3D Digital Twin platform for real-time oversight of security, safety, and sustainability operations.

THE NEXT CHAPTER: TOWARDS A REGENERATIVE FUTURE

SJ views today’s challenges – climate change, resource scarcity, and urban resilience – as opportunities for regenerative change, to go beyond doing less harm, and leave the world in better stead. From reimagining urban environments with its biophilic, super low-energy SJ Campus to conserving heritage through adaptive reuse with the Temasek Shophouse in Singapore; from enabling clean energy transitions with Snowy 2.0 in Australia to restoring ecosystems with the New Lowell Vision Plan in Canada, SJ is committed to creating futures worth inheriting.

As Singapore celebrates 60 years, SJ as a group marks a decade of growth, shaped by the same vision and resilience that built a nation. And as Singapore writes its next chapter on the global stage, SJ will be there – designing with heart, engineering with purpose, and building, always, for the better.
