A leader in energy and urban development in Asia, Sembcorp is driving energy transformation responsibly.

Sembcorp Industries Ltd (“Sembcorp”) was established in 1998 through the merger of Singapore Technologies Industrial Corporation (STIC) and Sembawang Corporation, with the vision of becoming Southeast Asia’s leading civil engineering and construction company. Its early contributions to Singapore’s industrial development – which includes the provision of essential utilities on Jurong Island and support for the growing petrochemical sector, laid a strong foundation for its evolution into a key player in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure, both domestically and across the region.

Today, Sembcorp is at the forefront of Asia’s energy transition, addressing the energy trilemma by balancing sustainability, reliability, and affordability. The company is advancing energy security and environmental responsibility through its portfolio of renewable energy, decarbonisation solutions, and low-carbon industrial parks. Guided by its purpose to drive the energy transition responsibly, Sembcorp continues to shape a more sustainable energy future for the region.

This purpose is supported by Sembcorp’s proven track record in Singapore’s energy evolution - from pioneering piped natural gas and transitioning to liquefied natural gas, to helping anchor key industries such as data centres and semiconductors through reliable utility infrastructure.

As Singapore’s largest renewables player, Sembcorp recognises its vital role in enabling the nation’s energy transition, which is centred around the “Four Switches” framework: natural gas, solar energy, regional power grids, and low-carbon alternatives.

A LEADER IN NATURAL GAS

Singapore’s shift from oil to cleaner energy marked a pivotal moment in its energy journey, with piped natural gas playing a central role in this transition, and Sembcorp has been instrumental in driving this change.

Sembcorp plays a key role in the energy transition by addressing the energy trilemma - finding the right balance between sustainability, reliability, and affordability.

Sembcorp’s leadership was demonstrated by its landmark West Natuna Gas Sales Agreement with Indonesian state-owned energy company Pertamina. With this deal, Sembcorp became Singapore’s first commercial importer and retailer of natural gas, facilitating the transformation of Singapore’s power industry.

In 2008, Sembcorp built on this momentum by expanding its gas imports from West Natuna. This move increased Sembcorp’s daily gas import capacity and further cemented Sembcorp’s position as a major player in Singapore’s natural gas market.

DRIVING THE CHARGE IN SOLAR ENERGY

As Singapore shifts to a low-carbon future, solar power has become a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy.

Taking centre stage in this transformation is Sembcorp’s pioneering innovations in solar installations. Notable projects include the Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm, Singapore’s first inland floating solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and its Solar Farm in Tuas, Singapore’s first mobile solar farm with an integrated rainwater harvesting system.

To address solar intermittency, it developed one of Southeast Asia’s largest Energy Storage System on Jurong Island to boost grid resilience.

At the same time, Sembcorp’s ground-mount solar projects support Singapore’s net-zero goals while maximising land use – repurposing yard space at Keppel Terminal and solarising 60 hectares of vacant land and five building rooftops on Jurong Island.

ENERGY WITHOUT BORDERS

As part of Singapore’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and enhance long-term energy security, Singapore is importing clean electricity from neighbouring countries, leveraging the region’s abundant low-carbon resources. At the forefront of this transition is Sembcorp.

In December 2024, Sembcorp began importing 50 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy from Peninsular Malaysia. And in May 2025 Sembcorp, together with leading energy companies from Malaysia and Vietnam, announced a tripartite industry alliance to explore the export of renewable electricity from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore.

By investing in energy infrastructure across Southeast Asia, Sembcorp is securing access to green energy for the nation while strengthening the region’s power grid – reinforcing its commitment to mutual progress beyond power imports as Singapore journeys toward a sustainable energy future and its SG60 aspirations.

ADVANCING THE FUTURE OF LOW-CARBON SOLUTIONS

As Singapore positions itself as a regional hub for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution, Sembcorp is leading efforts to support this vision by advancing green hydrogen infrastructure development.

A major initiative underway is the construction of a new multi-utilities centre on Jurong Island, featuring a 600MW hydrogen-ready power plan. Set to be operational by 2026, the plant will supply power, steam, firewater, and demineralised water to customers, making another stride towards using low-carbon alternatives for power generation.

In addition, Sembcorp has been shortlisted by the Energy Market Authority and the Maritime and Port Authority to develop a low- or zero-carbon ammonia solution for power generation and bunkering on Jurong Island. This initiative supports Singapore’s National Hydrogen Strategy and accelerates the adoption of low-carbon ammonia as a viable fuel. It also aligns with Singapore’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and strengthens its role as a regional leader in hydrogen innovation and clean energy technologies.

GROWING THE GREEN WORKFORCE

Sembcorp is also committed to driving industry-wide upskilling and fostering capabilities building in the sector. In Sembcorp Solar Singapore is first SkillsFuture Queen Bee for the Energy and Power sector October 2024, Sembcorp Solar - Sembcorp’s renewables arm in Singapore - was named the first SkillsFuture Queen Bee for the Energy and Power sector, partnering with SkillsFuture Singapore to deliver 1,800 training places and mentor over 40 proof-of-concept solar projects over three years.

Sembcorp also strengthens solar workforce development through partnerships with Institutes of Higher Learning - it collaborated with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) to launch the SP Sembcorp Solar PV Research Lab and established a first-of-its-kind sustainable solutions training centre with the Institute of Technical Education.

This expanding network of skilled solar professionals, combined with Sembcorp’s decades of expertise and industry leadership, is helping to drive Singapore’s sustainable energy future. By developing talent and advancing clean energy solutions, Sembcorp not only ensures energy security but also reinforces its position as a leader in energy and urban development in Asia.
