Framed by its history, Berlin is where the most apocalyptic war fought by humankind came to an end in Europe, and where two countries, forged in the ashes of that war, became united in peace in 1989

At a height of 368m, the TV Tower is the tallest structure in Berlin, and all of Germany. It was built in 1969 as a symbol of one-upmanship by the then-socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR), better known as East Germany, against the West. Documents released after reunification in 1989 show how much of the tower was constructed with Western materials and technology, and how effective the East German espionage machine was in acquiring that know-how.

When it was completed, the tower revealed a major embarrassment for the GDR. Its major feature is a large orb and when the sun shines on its tiled stainless steel surface, the reflection usually appears in the form of a cross. Citizens referred to it as “The Pope’s Revenge” against the atheistic government, which sought to deflect the fiasco by declaring it a “plus” sign for the government.
