Expanding upon its feminine universe, Richard Mille’s RM 037 Red Gold Snow Set proves mechanical ambition and refined aesthetic codes can go hand in hand

Long has the label “for ladies” immediately equated to diminutive and unassuming afterthoughts of the items and accessories originally wrought for their male counterparts. Standards of femininity have often demanded the utmost discretion of its practitioners, turning subtlety and demureness into stylistic paradigms. In the early 20th century, even the act of reading the hour in public had to be conducted invisibly, an expectation simply unimaginable in the fast-paced lifestyles of today.

Times have changed, to the relief of the modern woman. She now commands authority and extravagance as she pleases, coolly in control of her day without entertaining the thought of needing to deflect attention. From casual forays to showstopping soirées, ticking seconds flow just as steadily under her calm supervision. After all, what should stop her from embracing boldness and maximalism on the wrist? In the world of haute horology, nobody asks this question louder than Richard Mille.

For over 20 years, the Swiss manufacture has committed to honouring the strengths and spirits of women through fine watchmaking. It counts a fabulous stable of female personalities, including illustrious Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, American motorsport star Aurora Straus, Ukrainian high-jumper Yuliya Levchenko and Japanese snowboarding champion Tomoka Takeuchi, among its friends and partners, reiterating an enduring attraction of those not afraid to make their mark in the world.

To the keen collector, of course, none of this is news — since the brand’s inception in 2001, it has always courted the eyes of the most confident wearers, arming them with advanced precision and an uncompromisingly unique aesthetic identity. Richard Mille’s ladies’ collection is a glowing testament to its intrepid pursuit of creativity, innovation and technical excellence that transcends gender.

Crowning glory
At the pinnacle of this ethos sits the RM 037, a sweeping love letter to sophistication, mechanical mastery and absolute detail. The daring marvel was conceptualised as a distillation of the house’s savoir-faire, concentrating its experiences within a single work that could be elevated to a groundbreaking and spectacular level. Over the years, it has emerged as one of the brand’s most distinct icons owing to its contemporary visuals and inspired use of materials.

Fronting the ladies collection is undoubtedly the Red Gold Snow Set, where feminine sensibilities, peerless craftsmanship and technical innovation coexist in seamless harmony. An ode to high jewellery expertise, the watch features a 52mm x 34mm case fashioned from alluring 18-carat red gold in the maison’s famously curved tonneau shape, with its bezel studded beyond generously in a dazzling shroud of diamonds.

This namesake snow setting of the stones, each within 0.5mm and 1.6mm in size, is painstakingly executed to degrees so finely calculated it appears totally random — the true mark of a professional artisan. Every jewel must be held on thin prongs and fitted together within a micron’s precision, such that no two arrangements are alike. The result? A blanket that effortlessly captures the charming glimmer of light dancing on ice, tapering off beautifully along the case side.

Power + Pedigree
Housed within is the watch’s beating heart — the Calibre CRMA1, a skeletonised automatic-winding created exclusively for the RM 037 over a five-year development period, and the brand’s first fully in-house construction. The movement comprises a microblasted grade 5 titanium baseplate with electroplasma treatment and bridges in matching material, for exceptional rigidity and surface flatness to enable flawless gear train function. Individual components were separately tested to meet optimal strength requirements which, when combined with the CRMA1’s 50-hour power reserve, guarantee ideal daily wear performance.

Visually, the calibre’s elegant contrasts of surfaces, textures and finishes imbues the entire timepiece with a futuristic edge, composing a complex landscape that compels the passing look and invites it to dwell on each intricate moment.

Set against this novel mechanical matrix is a diamond-paved dial, marrying cutting-edge watchmaking with old-world ornamental artistry. The glimmering border wraps an intoxicating scarlet-hued insert made from jasper. The opaque crystalline stone is prized for its deep, earthy intensity of colour and thick, natural banding, here veering into bluish-violet striations.

White-tipped hands, also in red gold, glide to meet equally pearly round indices along the hour track. A semi-instantaneous oversized date display positioned at 12 o’ clock operates via two skeletonised calendar discs on a white field, providing superb legibility at a glance. The complication can be operated using a sleek teardrop-shaped pusher between 10 and 11 o’clock.

To the case’s bottom right, meanwhile, is a mirroring button that manipulates the function selector, now considered a signature of the model. Indicated by a small window at 4 o’clock, the innovation enables wearers to toggle between the W (Winding), N (Neutral) or H (Hand Setting) options, with a unique hand to display the selected function.

Not only is the interface intuitive, a special gear system mitigates stressful forces placed upon the crown, such that interferences of its functions with the movement are impossible. A patented stem-crown mechanism is integrated into the case structure rather than the calibre, isolating the latter from shocks for ease of mind even in the roughest usages. Completing this gorgeous ticker is a striking rubber strap in bright rouge and accented with a warm hardware buckle.

The RM 037 Red Gold Snow Set is an exemplary tribute to not only the maison’s innovative passion in horology and gem-setting, but also its undisputed status as the watchmaker who truly understands women.
