Starting the design journey, both UNStudio and Ahrend were enthusiastic about infusing sustainability into every aspect of Remode, resulting in a chair crafted from durable, eco-conscious materials and built for longevity through repair, replacement, and recycling. This philosophy paves the way for a chair that not only aids users in comfort but also reduces environmental impact.
Established in 1988 by Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, UNStudio is a Dutch architectural design studio renowned for its expertise in architecture, interior architecture, product design, urban development, and infrastructural projects. The name 'UNStudio' symbolises United Network Studio, reflecting the collaborative ethos that defines the studio's practice.
Established in Amsterdam in 1896, Royal Ahrend has solidified its position as a global leader in the office furniture sector. As a privately-owned company, Royal Ahrend specialises in creating invigorating workspaces and high-performance system furniture that are directly distributed to clients worldwide.
CEO Rolf Verspuij stressed the essentiality of circular design for products like Remode, pushing for a sustainable lifespan that extends through multiple user cycles. Key to this ambition was the Envalior material Akulon® RePurposed, boasting exceptional mechanical performance derived from 78% recycled plastics, including 62% sourced from reclaimed ocean plastics.

The netweave fabric used for the seat and back elevates functionality, comfort, and sustainability, blending style with substance by incorporating 80% post-consumer recycled polyester. Reflecting the evolving work environments, Remode was conceived to fit diverse spaces beyond the office, available in stylish hues like pink, black, and grey to complement various interior settings, from traditional workplaces to cosy home environments.
Ben van Berkel drew inspiration from the versatility and comfort of sneaker design, seeking to imbue Remode with these qualities alongside ergonomics and aesthetics. The chair's design features, from accent colour controls to smooth contouring and netweave seating, not only enhance its visual appeal but also underscore its functional brilliance.
