(April 26): DeepSeek’s delayed release of its V4 model points to a strategic shift towards deeper integration with China’s domestic chip ecosystem, according to Yuyuantantian, a social media account affiliated with the government-controlled China Central Television.

Rather than prioritising rapid iteration, DeepSeek spent months reworking its software stack to optimise performance on Huawei Technologies Co’s Ascend chips, moving beyond basic compatibility towards hardware-specific tuning, the account said on Sunday. The approach aligns with Beijing’s push for greater self-reliance across the AI supply chain as access to advanced foreign chips tightens.

A year after rattling Silicon Valley with its technology, DeepSeek rolled out preview versions of a new flagship artificial intelligence (AI) model a few days ago, calling it the most powerful open-source platform in a challenge to rivals from OpenAI to Anthropic PBC.

Industry analysts cited by Yuyuantantian said growing adoption of domestic semiconductors, alongside increased capital support, has enabled early deployments of large language models trained and run entirely on local compute. The trend suggests China is gradually building a more resilient, self-contained AI ecosystem, even as performance gaps with leading global platforms remain.
