The Edge Singapore picked up two awards at the eighth SGX Orb Awards on Nov 27, including Story of the Year.

Executive editor Goola Warden won the top prize at the Singapore Exchange’s (SGX) annual awards with her cover story “Loss in translation: The downside of a haven currency like Singapore's”, published in September. Disruptions caused by changes in the global currency system could hamper export and import activity, affecting the stock performance of local stocks, warned Warden.

Meanwhile, associate editor Samantha Chiew won The Hidden Gem with her cover story on Mainboard-listed conglomerate Thakral Corporation, also published in September. Her interview with CEO and executive director Inderbethal Singh Thakral covered the group’s IPO of associated company GemLife Communities Group in Australia.

Submissions were reviewed by an independent panel of judges comprising Chuin Ting Weber, CEO and CIO at MoneyOwl; Richard Chan, partner and head of equities at Avanda; Sophie Astles, former head of awards and research at GlobalCapital; Terence Wong, founder and CEO at Azure Capital.

This marks The Edge Singapore’s sixth consecutive year winning in the Hidden Gem category, which seeks to honour the best feature or analysis of an under-covered stock listed on the SGX. Chiew last won in this category in 2020.

The Edge Singapore has also won the Story of the Year prize at five of the award’s eight editions. Senior writer Nicole Lim won the award last year with a November 2023 cover story on the creator economy.

A story on young adults’ spending habits by Sue-Ann Tan and Timothy Goh of The Straits Times won in the An Experiential Treat category, which is awarded to creative methods of storytelling. Thrive by The Business Times won #TheGoTo award, which honours digital platforms focused on financial education.

This year’s youth-focused special category, titled The Markets of Tomorrow, went to Ngee Ann Polytechnic students Fedora Tan and Darren Tan for their video on blockchain technology.

Teo Ai June, SGX Group's head of marketing and communications, says: “This year’s multi-generational lens reflects our commitment to promote investor education and nurture talent. In an age where fact races fiction in our social feeds, responsible voices — established and emerging — are vital to help investors navigate noise and form informed views.”
