SINGAPORE (June 7): Britain would plunge into a “major political crisis” should the Conservatives lose this week’s snap UK election on Thursday, says the chief economist of PineBridge Investments, Markus Schomer.

The asset manager, a majority-owned subsidiary of Pacific Century Group, therefore holds the view that the Conservatives will most likely win the elections with Theresa May retaining her position as Prime Minister – although latest polls show that her lead has shrunk to a estimated seven points, with some giving her a only one-point advantage.

“On the day Theresa May announced the snap election, Labour was trailing by nearly 20 points. Yet, as last year's Brexit referendum demonstrated, political events can be unpredictable and that once unassailable lead has shrunk dramatically in recent weeks. It didn’t help that Theresa May herself performed rather poorly campaigning and her party's policies are not particularly popular with voters,” observes Schomer in a Tuesday note.
