Getting a consistently smooth experience on mobile apps remains challenging, especially in crowded areas. For instance, a WhatsApp video call often stutters even as text messages on the same app go through without a hitch. That’s because video calls require significantly more bandwidth, yet most mobile networks do not differentiate between types of app traffic. All data is treated equally, regardless of whether it's a simple text or a high-definition video stream.

To deliver a better and more uniform mobile app connectivity, Singapore Telecommunications(Singtel) is now offering 5G+, an enhanced version of its 5G service that leverages network slicing.

Network slicing allows Singtel to allocate dedicated bandwidth (or “slices” of the network) that dynamically adapt to a user’s needs. For example, data-intensive apps like livestreaming or gaming can be prioritised to perform reliably even in crowded environments, while low-bandwidth tasks are routed separately.

Ng Tian Chong, chief executive officer of Singtel Singapore, likened the approach to a highway system: network slicing enables Singtel to create dedicated lanes, like bus lanes, for apps requiring high performance, so they are not slowed down by general traffic.

He adds: “In the past, enterprise clients paid to get a network slice so that they don't get caught in network congestion [and to achieve high speeds for critical applications]. Today, we're democratising this capability for the everyday users so that everyone gets the speed, reliability and protection they need to innovate and thrive in the years ahead.”

Network slicing is not new to Singtel. The telco has been providing the capability to enterprise clients across various industries, including homeland security, public safety, healthcare, retail and transportation. PSA Singapore, for instance, uses a dedicated slice from Singtel’s 5G network to enhance real-time shipment tracking and further streamline crane operations at its Tuas Port.

For consumers, Singtel has already trialled network slicing at large-scale events — including the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, the National Day Parade, and major international concerts — to enable smooth connectivity even during congested periods.

Impact of the 700MHz spectrum deployment

To complement network slicing, Singtel deployed the 700MHz low-band spectrum in February —the first and only operator in Singapore to do so. Ng says that adding the spectrum is akin to widening the lanes on the highway to ease traffic flow in his previous analogy.

The low-band spectrum, he adds, can travel longer distances and penetrate physical barriers like walls more effectively. This has helped increase network signal strength of up to 40% in high-rise buildings, indoor and underground spaces, as well as in remote areas across Singapore. As such, Singtel users can enjoy uninterrupted calls and data services even in locations like basement carparks and HDB estates, according to the telco.

Singtel 5G+ Priority

Singtel has already upgraded its existing 5G users to 5G+ with 700MHz earlier this year. As of the first week of May 2025, customers on SIM-only Plus and Ultra, L plans and above have been further upgraded to Singtel 5G+ Priority at no additional cost.

Singtel 5G+ Priority offers greater bandwidth, ultra-low latency and up to four times faster speeds. It is designed to deliver enhanced digital experiences, including smoother video streaming, ultra-responsive gaming, and more stable video calls. Users will also benefit from guaranteed network access, ensuring consistent connectivity even in high-traffic locations and during peak usage periods.

In response to the growing threat of scams, Singtel has included real-time threat protection in its 5G+ Priority service through a feature called Mobile Protect. The security feature activates automatically when users connect to Singtel’s 5G network (even when they are roaming overseas) with no need for app downloads or manual configuration.

Mobile Protect blocks access to known scam websites and malicious links, shielding users from fraudulent shopping sites, phishing SMS targeting bank accounts, and harmful pop-ups or redirects encountered while browsing social media or the web. According to Ng, the security feature blocks 6.6 million potential malicious URLs, DNS requests, and threats each month.

The Mobile Protect feature is also available as an optional add-on for other Singtel mobile customers.

Beyond connectivity and security, Singtel 5G+ Priority customers will also receive a premium customer experience. This includes priority access at Singtel Shops, faster response times on customer hotlines, and expedited support via chat channels.

They will also enjoy exclusive perks such as early access to new handset launches, loyalty rewards, and special discounts on devices and services.
